To my mind, an art advisor is your key ally in resolving your lemons problem. Whereas the role of dealers and gallerists is to bring deep expertise to the market, I believe that the purpose of the art advisor is to be your advocate, and to analyze and process this expertise to your benefit. Consequently, an art advisor can only be of value to you if they operate independently from dealers, galleries and auction houses, which I will discuss in more detail in Chapter 3. Meanwhile, let’s look at the three areas in which an art advisor provides value: educating you on art and the art market, reducing your transactional risk and, once you have amassed a collection, helping you to manage your art assets.
